Jumpstart a Dead Battery

A dead battery doesn't have to strand you. With jumper cables and the right sequence, you're back on the road in minutes.

Step 1: Two cars parked side by side, both hoods open Step 2: Red jumper cable on dead battery positive terminal Step 3: Black cable on good battery negative terminal Step 4: Black cable grounded to bare metal engine bracket Step 5: Turning the ignition key to start the engine Step 6: Removing jumper cables in reverse order

Step-by-Step

  1. Park the Helper Car

Position the working vehicle hood-to-hood with the dead one, close enough for the cables to reach both batteries. Turn the helper car off before connecting cables.

  2. Connect Red to Dead Positive

Clamp one red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. It may be marked with a plus sign or red cover.

  3. Connect Red to Good Positive

Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.

  4. Connect Black to Good Negative

Clamp one black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.

  5. Ground the Final Clamp

Connect the last black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car's engine block, away from the battery. This prevents sparks near the battery.

  6. Start the Working Car, Then Yours

Let the working car run for 2–3 minutes, then try to start the dead vehicle. Once it starts, remove cables in reverse order. Drive for at least 30 minutes to recharge.
