Safety, Survival & Preparedness

Perform CPR

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere. The difference between life and death is often a bystander who knows what to do.

Step-by-Step

  1. Check Scene Safety

Before approaching, ensure the scene is safe for you. A dead rescuer helps no one. Check for traffic, electrical hazards, or other dangers.

  2. Check for Responsiveness

Tap the shoulders and shout. If no response, check for breathing (no more than 10 seconds). If not breathing normally, begin CPR immediately and have someone call 911.

  3. Position Your Hands

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest (lower half of the breastbone). Place your other hand on top, interlace fingers, and keep arms straight.

  4. Deliver 30 Compressions

Push down at least 2 inches at 100–120 beats per minute. Allow full chest recoil between compressions. Don't lean on the chest between compressions.

  5. Give 2 Rescue Breaths

Tilt the head back, lift the chin. Pinch the nose, create a seal over the mouth, and give a breath over 1 second. Watch for chest rise. Give the second breath. Return to compressions.

  6. Continue Until Help Arrives

Maintain the 30:2 ratio until emergency services take over, the person shows clear signs of life, or you are physically unable to continue. Use an AED as soon as one is available.
