Self-Defense Fundamentals

The goal is never to fight. The goal is to never be a victim. Awareness, deterrence, and controlled response are the real skills.

Step-by-Step

  1. Situational Awareness First

The best fight is the one that never happens. Scan your environment habitually. Know where the exits are. Avoid poorly lit areas at night. Trust your instincts — your subconscious often registers danger before you consciously register it.

  2. Learn a Proper Stance

Dominant foot back, non-dominant shoulder forward. Hands raised naturally, elbows in. This posture protects your centerline, gives balance, and does not telegraph aggression.

  3. Master Verbal De-escalation

Speak calmly and clearly. Use the person's name if you know it. Create distance. Give them an out that preserves their ego. Avoid aggressive language or sudden movements.

  4. Train Basic Strikes

A palm heel strike to the nose, elbow strike, and knee to the midsection. These are powerful, instinctive, and do not require years to train. Practice on a heavy bag or with a partner holding pads.

  5. Train Basic Blocks and Escapes

Parrying an overhand swing, wrist grabs, bear hug escapes, and clinch defense. These situations are more common than most. A few hours of training with a qualified instructor is invaluable.

  6. Train Consistently

Physical conditioning matters. A man in poor shape will gas out in seconds. Combine self-defense training with your fitness routine. Stamina, grip strength, and explosive power are your tools.
