Tie a Necktie

The Windsor knot is the standard of the well-dressed man. Learn it once and you will never be caught fumbling at a job interview again.

Step-by-Step

  1. Drape the Tie

Place the tie around your collar, wide end on your dominant side. The wide end should hang about 12 inches lower than the narrow end. This length will vary based on the knot and your torso length.

  2. Cross Over

Cross the wide end over the narrow end, then wrap it underneath from right to left.

  3. Up Through the Neck Loop

Bring the wide end up and through the loop at the neck, pulling it down in front.

  4. Wrap Around the Front

Bring the wide end around the front of the narrow end, left to right.

  5. Up Through and Down

Bring the wide end up through the neck loop again, then slide it down through the horizontal loop you created in the previous step.

  6. Tighten and Adjust

Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up toward the collar. The knot should be snug but not choking. Create a dimple by pinching just below the knot as you tighten. Adjust until the tip reaches your belt buckle.
